Tae Kwon Do

What is Tae Kwon Do?

Tae Kwon Do is the modernized way of an old oriental art of self-defense or unarmed combat. It was first heard of 1300 years ago in Korea when it was called Tae Kyon. Tae Kyon is a form of foot fighting. Throughout the centuries hand techniques were introduced and the combination is now called Tae Kwon Do, but in the more advanced techniques the use of legs is still more important. This makes Tae Kwon Do more effective and spectacular than other oriental self-defense arts, because the legs can develop more power and reach further than the hands. The Korean word "Tae" means kicking, jumping, stepping, or flying of the feet; "Kwon" means punching, striking or beating of hands, fists; "Do" means art, technique or way.

High ranking instructors are sent out from Korea to develop and improve Tae Kwon Do throughout the world. Every country has its own association affiliated with the international Tae Kwon Do Federation in Seoul, Korea. This Federation is headed by General Choi Hong Hi, 9th Dan Black Belt.

In the Far East, every country has developed its own style in which hands are used mainly. In China it is called "Kung Tao" or "Kung Fu", in Japan it is called "Karate" or "Kempoh", in Thailand "Tai Boxing", in Indonesia "pen Jap".
